  • Wait till you're announced

We've not yet lost all our graces

The hounds will stay in chains

Look upon Your Greatness and she'll

    Send the call out

    Call all the ladies out

    They're in their finery

    A hundred jewels on throats

    A hundred jewels between teeth

    Now bring my boys in

Their skin in craters like the moon

The moon we love like a brother

While he glows through the room

Dancin' around the lies we tell

Dancin' around big eyes, as well

    Even the comatose

    They don't dance and tell

    CHORUS:

We live in cities you'll never see on-screen

    Not very pretty,

but we sure know how to run things

Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams

And you know, we're on each other's team

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air

    So there

So all the cups got broke

    Shards beneath our feet

    But it wasn't my fault

    And everyone's competing

For a love they won't receive

'Cause what this palace wants is release

    CHORUS

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air So there

I'm kind of older than I was when I reveled without a care

    So there

    CHORUS

She’s like “Oh my God!” but I’m just gonna shake.
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair.
Won’t you come on over baby?
We can shake, shake, shake, shake, shake yeah.

WORDS & MUSIC BY/LETRA & MÚSICA DE
Moira Smiley

  • CHORUS:
    Sometime, anytime you wanna bellow
at the sky, call on me, call on me.
We’ll unzip the horizon with our voices.

You ask me why I sing softer now.
And did the world beat me down?
‘Cause back then I sang hard, I sang proud,
but where are the edges now?

    Ukrainian Summer, before the revolution.
I sat at the knees of the grandmother,
    her daughter told me
We could unzip the horizon with our voices.

And we were sat outside in the down light
of the midsummer feast, and the short night.
Singing to the dead so they bless the crop,
bless the young, bless the year.
We’ll unzip the horizon with our voices.

    CHORUS

This is the way we call the unknown
and lift the veil to the other side.
We’re singing to break the walls down,
the walls down, throwing the gate open wide.

Every breath I take has been taken before,
    every note’s been sung.
Who can I sing them all again for?

    Please don’t give up,
    please don’t lose that sound.
So many people fought to gain that ground.
    Please don’t give up,
    please don’t hide your voice.
So many people did not have that choice.

She told me the power of song was in the unison.
She gathered her friends all around her
and they pierced the sky with a call
    One melody from many voices

And from then ‘til now I remember
when the year is fat and full of shadows
I’m singing to the dead so they’ll bless the crop,
bless the young, bless the year.
We’ll unzip the horizon with our voices.

*A BYGONE SKY*

MUSIC BY/MÚSICA DE

WORDS BY/LETRA DE
Georgia Douglas Johnson

  • Dead Leaves
    By Georgia Douglas Johnson

The breaking dead leaves ‘neath my feet
    A plaintive melody repeat,
    Recalling shattered hopes that lie
As relics of a bygone sky.

Again I thread the mazy past,
Back where the mounds are scattered fast
Oh! Foolish tears, why do you start?
To break of dead leaves in the heart.

COMPOSER’S NOTE:

The text of A Bygone Sky comes from the poem Dead Leaves by Georgia Douglas Johnson. Born in the late 19th century, Johnson was a very accomplished artist in many respects–publishing multiple volumes of poetry, writing plays and hosting salons for the leading lights of the Harlem Renaissance. But in other ways her ambitions as a writer and composer were thwarted, and much of her poetry explores the theme of unrealised ambition. I wrote A Bygone Sky in honor of the many African American women of the 20th century, who, like Johnson, were stymied by the twin forces of racism and sexism from fully realising their talents and ambitions.

MEET THE COMPOSER:

Tara has sung in classical choirs for many years and is currently a soprano in the London Oriana Choir. In 2019, inspired by the Oriana’s five-year project to promote women composers, she began doing some choral composition of her own. Since then she has been busy writing, studying and encouraging other choir members to write music. She has been performed and commissioned in both the US and the UK. In 2023 she was selected as a composition fellow for the Choral Arts Initiative’s PREMIERE|Project Festival, and she has been commissioned to write for the New York City Master Chorale, Panoramic Voices, the Oriana, the Pembroke College Chapel Choir under the direction of Anna Lapwood and the International Choral Competition Ave Verum in Austria. By day Tara works for organizations committed to social justice and is currently Director of Programmes at Pembroke House, a community center in London.

WORDS BY/LETRA DE
Mickey May

  • Lovers: B-Roll
    By Mickey May

    Flickering footage
    of fingers through hair,
    of dust motes floating—
    like fairies or galaxies—
    in a sunbeam sneaking
    through window shades.

    The curves of your kindness
    are a homecoming.
    Quick perception,
    gentle connection,
    overflow of soul dripping
    from your lips to mine.

Lord, let me hear you laugh forever.
    Let me lick the stray
tear from your cheek to taste
    every nerve signal, every ounce
of empathy and salt within you.

Let me hear you laugh forever.

COMPOSER’S NOTE:
“Your absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color.”
-From “Separation” by W. S. Merwin

Grieving is part of the femme experience. We grieve the loss of our rights; the loss of our innocence as the male gaze objectifies us; the loss of our identity as we conform for others’ convenience. As for my encounters with grief, my mother died of cancer when I was eighteen. Six years later in January 2024, I lost my partner of five years to a sudden stroke when we were 24 years old. This piece is about where devotion must go when the receiver is no longer physically here. The five soprano soloists represent the wild expansion of grief, the choice to feel in a world that favors patriarchal constructs of efficiency over expression.

The piece ends with a meditative wish: “let me hear you laugh, forever.” I miss their laughter the most. I anchor to those memories to survive. To love from the femme perspective is to love someone beyond physicality: I am still learning just how expansive that love is as I experience the many unmistakable miracles and messages they continue to send me.

WORDS BY/LETRA DE
Jan Richardson

  • Perhaps it does not begin.
    Perhaps it is always.
    Perhaps it takes a lifetime
to open our eyes, to learn to see.

The luminous line of the map in the dark,
The vigil flame in the house of the heart,
    The love so searing
    we can’t keep from singing,
    from crying out.

Perhaps this day the light begins.
We are where the light begins.
    Perhaps it does not begin.
    Perhaps it is always.

  • I am resilient
    I trust the movement
    I negate the chaos
    Uplift the negative
I'll show up at the table,
    again and again and again
I'll close my mouth and learn to listen

    These times are poignant
    The winds have shifted
    It's all we can do
    To stay uplifted
    Pipelines through backyards
    Wolves howlin’ out front
Yeah, I got my crew but truth is what I want

    Realigned and on point
    Power to the peaceful
    Prayers to the waters
    Women at the center
All vessels open to give and receive
Let's see the system brought down to its knees

    I'm made of thunder
    I'm made of lightning
    I'm made of dirt
    Made of the fine things
My father taught me that I'm a speck of dust
And this world was made for me
So let's go and try our luck

I got my roots down deep
So what are we doing here?
    What has been done?
What are you gonna do about it
    when the world comes undone?

My voice feels tiny and I'm sure so does yours
But put us all together we make a mighty roar

REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

Generation Alpha is filled with change-makers who are hungry to make a positive impact on the world around them. Pano’s youth choir provides singers in 6th-12th grade with a vibrant and affirming space for choral singing, allowing them to connect with singers from a wide array of backgrounds. We meet each singer where they’re at, and explore the community building power of our voices united. In this Beta season of our project, our hope is that each singer who joins will have a hand in guiding Pano Youth Choir, helping determine its future and the role that it plays in the wider Pano community!

¡INSCRIPCIONES ABIERTAS!
