Generation Alpha is filled with change-makers who are hungry to make a positive impact on the world around them. Pano’s youth choir provides singers in 6th-12th grade with a vibrant and affirming space for choral singing, connecting with singers from a wide array of backgrounds. We meet each singer where they’re at, and explore the community building power of our voices united. We are so proud to bring you our very first concert: DEEP BREATHS.

We Are

WORDS & MUSIC BY
Ysaÿe M. Barnwell

  • For each child that’s born, a morning start rises

and sings to the universe who we are.

    We are our grandmothers’ prayers,

and we are our grandfathers’ dreamings,

we are the breath of our ancestors,

we are the spirit of God.

We are mothers of courage and fathers of time,

we are daughters of dust and the sons of great visions,

we’re sisters of mercy and brothers of lover,

we are lovers of life and the builders of nations,

we’re seekers of truth and keepers of faiths,

we are makers of peace and the wisdom of ages.

Resilience

WORDS & MUSIC BY
Abbie Betinis

  • Resilience,

    we are strong;

shoulder to shoulder keep movin’ on,

    Resilience,

    make a new plan;

stand up again and say yes we can.

    Oh! Oh!

    We are strong;

    hold on!

I wanna make it and I know we will,

yes it’s hard to keep goin’ but it’s worse to stand still.

    Resilience.

Breaths

WORDS BY
Birago Diop

MUSIC BY
Ysaÿe M. Barnwell

  • Listen more often to things than to beings.

‘Tis the ancestors’ breath when the fire’s voice is heard.

‘Tis the ancestors’ breath in the voice of the waters.

Those who have dies, have never, never left.

The dead are not under the earth.

They are in the rustling trees, they are in the groaning woods.

They are in the crying grass. They are in the moaning rocks.

Those who have died have never, never left.

The dead have a pact with the living.

They are in the woman’s breast, they are in the wailing child.

They are with us in the home. They are with us in the crowd.

Rook

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Andy Partridge

  • Rook, rook, read from your book

Who murders who, and where is the treasure hid?  Crow, crow, spill all you know

Is that my name on the bell?

Rook, rook, gaze in the brook

If there's a secret, can I be part of it?

Crow, crow, before I'll let go

Say, is that my name on the bell?

Soar up high, see the semaphore from the washing lines  Break the code of the whispering chimneys and traffic signs  What's the message that's written under the base of clouds?  Plans eternal, I know you know, so don't blurt out loud

Rook, rook, by hook or by crook

I'll make you tell me what this whole thing's about  Crow, crow, why can't you show

If that's my name on the bell?

On the wings of night, I fly too, above field and stream  My head bursting with knowledge 'til I wake from the dream  If I die and I find that I had a soul inside

Promise me that you'll take it up on its final ride

Rook, rook, gaze in the brook

If there's a secret, can I be part of it?

Crow, crow, before I'll let go

Say, is that my name on the bell?

Is that my name on the bell?

One Foot/Lead With Love

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Melanie DeMore

  • You gotta put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

    Don’t give up hope.

    You’re not alone.

    Don’t give up hope.

    Keep movin’ on.

You gotta put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

    Lift up your eyes

    Don’t you despair

    Look up ahead

    The path is there

You gotta put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

    I know you’re scared

    And I’m scared too

    But here I am

    Right next to you

You gotta put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

    Lift up your hands

    And raise your voice

    Cause it’s my body

    And it’s my choice

You gotta put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Put one foot in front of the other

    And lead with love.

Violet Clementine

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Lady Lamb

  • You build a nest of yellow yarn

You hope to God the yellowed yarn

Is soft enough to break your fall

Should you fall, should you fall

You build a nest of yellow yarn

You hope to God the yellowed yarn

Is soft enough to break your fall

Should you fall, should you fall

You build a nest of yellow yarn

You hope to God the yellowed yarn

Is soft enough to break your fall

Should you fall, should you fall

You build a nest of yellow yarn

You hope to God the yellowed yarn

Is soft enough to break your fall

Should you fall, should you fall

You build a nest of yellow yarn

You hope to God the yellowed yarn

Is soft enough to break your fall

Should you fall, should you fall

Blood is let and tears are kept

In hollow chests while sweat's ignored

However spent, our tears and sweat

Just kept secret and strewn from pores

Blood is let and tears are kept

In hollow chests while sweat's ignored

However spent, our tears and sweat

Just kept secret and strewn from pores

    Keep your silence golden

    And words important

    You're only a handsome animal

Blood is let and tears are kept

In hollow chests while sweat's ignored

However spent, our tears and sweat

Just kept secret and strewn from pores

Blood is let and tears are kept

In hollow chests while sweat's ignored

However spent, our tears and sweat

Just kept secret and strewn from pores

    Keep your silence golden

    And words important

    You're only a handsome animal

    Keep your silence golden

    And words important

    You're only a handsome animal

MEditation on Breathing

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Sarah Dan Jones

  • Breathe in,

    Breathe out.

    When I breathe in,

    I breathe in peace.

    When I breathe out,

    I breathe out love.

Concerto No. 5 in D Major

Op. 22, Movement 3

MUSIC BY

Breathe Soft Ye Winds

WORDS BY

Ambrose Philips

MUSIC BY
Greg Gilpin

  • Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    ye waters gently flow.

    Shield her, ye trees,

    Ye flow’rs, around her grow,

    Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    ye waters gently flow.

    Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    ye waters gently flow.

    Ye swains, I beg you,

    pass in silence by.

    My love,

My love in yonder vale asleep

    doth lie.

    Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    ye waters gently flow.

    Shield her, ye trees,

    Ye flow’rs, around her grow,

    Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    ye waters gently flow.

My love in yonder vale asleep

    doth lie.

    Breathe soft,

    ye winds,

    breathe soft,

    ye winds.

O del mio Dolce ardor

WORDS BY

Raniero de Calzabigi

MUSIC BY
Willibald von Gluck

  • O del mio dolce ardor Bramato oggetto,

    L'aura che tu respiri,

    Alfin respiro.

O vunque il guardo io giro,

    Le tue vaghe sembianze

    Amore in me dipinge:

    Il mio pensier si finge

    Le più liete speranze;

    E nel desio che così

    M'empie il petto

Cerco te, chiamo te, spero e sospiro.

  • Oh, desired object

    Of my sweet ardor,

    The air which you breathe,

    At last I breathe.

    Wherever I turn my glance

    Your lovely features

    Paint love for me:

    My thoughts imagine

    The most happy hopes,

    And in the longing which

    Fills my bosom

I seek you, I call you,

    I hope, and I sigh.

Stardust

WORDS BY

Brittny Ray Crowell

MUSIC BY
B.E. Boykin

  • If we are only stardust

Let your names reach to the sky above us

Like petals wafting on a breeze

We lift you up beyond our reach

“Kum Buba Yali, Kum Buba Tambe”

    Amen, Amen

“Kum Buba Yali, Kum Buba Tambe”

    We say your names

    If we are only stardust

May your blood never be in vain

Life petals wafting on a breeze

We lift you up beyond our reach

“Kum Buba Yali, Kum Buba Tambe”

    Amen, Amen

“Kum Buba Yali, Kum Buba Tambe”

    We say your names

Each day we grieve another face

    Maybe all this stardust

Will carry us home one day

To a home where we can run

A home where we can pray

A home where we can breathe,

To sleep and dream without fear—

    Is justice this far away?

    We cry your names

For the strength to keep on fighting

With the hope that you are flying

“Kum Buba Yali, Kum Buba Tambe”

    Stardust

Stand Up (from Harriet)

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Joshuah Campbell, Cynthia Erivo, Mac Huff

  • I been walkin’

    with my face turned to the sun;

    weight on my shoulders,

    a bullet in my gun.

Oh, I got eyes in the back of my head,

just in case I have to run.

I do what I can when I can while I can for my people,

while the clouds rolls back and the starts fill the night.

That’s when I’m gonna stand up,

    take my people with me.

Together we are going to a brand new home.

    Far across the river,

    can you hear freedom calling,

    calling me to answer?

    Gonna keep on keepin’ on.

I can feel it in my bones.

    Early in the mornin’,

before the sun beings to shine,

    we’re gonna start movin’

    towards that separating line.

    I’m wading through muddy waters;

you know I got a made up mind.

And I don’t mind if I lose any blood on the way to salvation.

And I’ll fight with the strength that I got until I die.

    So I’m gonna stand up,

    take my people with me.

Together we are going to a brand new home.

    Far across the river,

    can you hear freedom calling,

    calling me to answer?

    Gonna keep on keepin’ on.

And I know what’s around the bend

might be hard to face ‘cause I’m alone.

    And I just might fail,

    but, Lord knows, I tried,

sure as stars fill up the sky.

    Stand up,

    take my people with me.

Together we are going to a brand new home.

    Far across the river,

    can you hear freedom calling,

    calling me to answer?

    Gonna keep on keepin’ on.

    I’m gonna stand up,

    take my people with me.

Together we are going to a brand new home.

    Far across the river,

    can you hear freedom calling,

    calling me to answer?

    Gonna keep on keepin’ on.

I can feel it in my bones.

I go to prepare a place for you.

Bend the Arc

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Wendi Buck

  • Bend the arc and break the ceiling.

    Human rights for human beings.

Bend the arc, bend the arc.

Reach out your hand and help another.

We were meant to help each other.

Bend the arc, bend the arc.

Crowded Table

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
Brandi Carlile (arr. Andrea Ramsey)

  • You can hold my hand

When you need to let go.

    I can be a mountain

    When you’re feeling valley low.

    I can be a streetlight

    Showing you the way home.

If you can hold my hand

When you need to let go.

I want a house with a crowded table

And a place by the fire for everyone

Let us take on the world while we’re young and able

And bring us back together when the day is done.

    If we want a garden

We’re gonna have to sow the seed

    Plant a little happiness

    Let the roots run deep.

If it’s love that we give

Then it’s love that we reap

    If we want a garden

We’re gonna have to sow the seeds.

I want a house with a crowded table

And a place by the fire for everyone

Let us take on the world while we’re young and able

And bring us back together when the day is done.

    The door is always open

    Your picture’s on my wall

    Everyone’s a little broken

    But everyone belongs

    Yeah everyone belongs

I want a house with a crowded table

And a place by the fire for everyone

Let us take on the world while we’re young and able

And bring us back together when the day is done.
